Bee Farm in Dunzio: Safeguarding the Future Among Stone, Sun and Bees

In the heart of Vallemaggia, near the village of Aurigeno, lies Dunzio — a place where history and living nature meet. Here, beside the Antica Vigèra, an 18th-century stone apiary restored thanks to the Fondazione Monte di Dunzio, Bee Farm has installed its new hives.

This gesture carries a meaning beyond honey production: it represents a return — bringing the bees back to a place where, centuries ago, humans first learned to listen to nature.

In the photo, our beekeeper carefully orients the hives using a digital compass, aligning them precisely to 135° Southeast. This position ensures the bees receive the first sunlight of the morning, keeping the hives warm and dry, and allowing them to start working early in the day.

The Dunzio project brings together three essential values of Bee Farm:
territorial stewardship, through the preservation of a historic site;
biodiversity, through the protection of pollinators;
and living memory, the link between craftsmanship and landscape.

Bee Farm and the Fondazione Monte di Dunzio share the same vision: beekeeping as a cultural act — a bridge between generations, a way to safeguard nature while keeping tradition alive.
